Day # 702; Loop Miles to Date = 8,511
OK...time for some catching up...
We ended up getting "trapped" in Frankfort by the weather...the wind was our primary concern, but we had plenty of rain dumped on us while we bided our time waiting for a window to travel further south on Lake Michigan. It is very fall-like up here, but that didn't stop the locals from enjoying the Labor Day weekend...
We even saw a mermaid!! |
This young lady and her friends were having a ball riding the surf into the beach. There were hundreds of folks out on the beach...many of them swimming...brrrrr. |
Once the Labor Day weekend was over, this and many other beach towns along Michigan's coast dramatically slow down...to a crawl. It was like someone turned the lights out and sent everyone home. But, we had another highlight before we left...we got a visit from our friends Phil and Sue...

These great folks live on Bear Lake not far from Frankfort in the summers, and luckily, our schedules allowed for a nice visit. Shout out to Sparky! |
After a full week at Frankfort, the weather window finally opened and we leapt through. We have had 3 really solid traveling days, and decided to get as many miles under our belt as possible...167 miles in 3 days. We stopped in Ludington, Muskegon and today (Sunday) made it to South Haven. We were lucky to briefly see our friends on Sum Escape (Tom and Julie) while in Muskegon...it was really nice of them to bike a couple of miles out of their way to come and see us at the marina. Thanks guys!
A couple of sights from our brief stops in these towns...
The break wall at Frankfort...doesn't look nasty in this picture, but the wave action out in the lake (to the right) was pretty impressive. |
The SS Badger...the last coal fired passenger and car ferry operating on the Great Lakes. It runs between Ludington and Manitowoc, WI. It is enormous. |
We found the House of Flavors in Ludington...great ice cream! They are in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest sundae ever made...in Ludington, on the street...it was over a half mile long! |
The SS Badger steaming out of port. |
A bit of a maze of fishing boats leaving Muskegon...everyone was out fishing...this is just a small sample. |
Huge high speed ferry coming into Muskegon from Milwaukee. |
We've seen scads of sailboats out these last 3 days...wonderful sailing weather. |
So, if the weather window stays open, we may keep on moving tomorrow...Chicago by Tuesday??
