Parry Sound to Byng Inlet (Britt) Plus Some Bonus Pics

Day #665; Loop Miles to Date = 7,858

We left Parry Sound as scheduled on Thursday, but we traveled further than we had originally planned. There was a weather system arriving, and our choice was to sit in Parry Sound for another 2-3 days - or skip an anchorage at Snug Harbor and go directly to our next stop in Britt at Wrights Marina. We decided on the latter, and had a beautiful day to transit on the outside in Georgian Bay. The winds were negligible, and our 61 mile day very enjoyable.

So, now we are sitting in Britt for a couple of days waiting for the weather to settle. Our next few stops are anchorages, and we also have about 20 miles of open water to cross on the Bay to get to them. So, it is looking like it will be Sunday or Monday before we venture further. But, we are with friends, the marina is just fine, and Kawartha Ice Cream is only steps away!

Some pics from our travels to Britt...this area is called the 30,000 Islands for a reason. And a tremendous variety of cottages adorn many of them.

Nothing like having your own float plane to get around.

We exited the small craft channel at Pointe au Baril (Point of Barrel) to transit a section of the Georgian Bay up to Britt. Here is an interesting snippet about this spot from Wikipedia:

Pointe au Baril was named after the barrel on the point that originally (1870s) marked the treacherous entry to the main channel from the open water of Georgian Bay. Early fur traders from Penetanguishene apparently lost a canoe near the point. Their canoe included a barrel of whiskey that was found by stranded traders the next spring. After a drinking spree the barrel was left on the point as a beacon. French mariners were soon calling it Pointe-au-Baril. Later this marker was improved to include a lantern in the barrel that would be lit by the first fisherman returning inland to light the way for the rest of the boats.

Point of Barrel Lighthouse.

And now for some bonus photos...our friends on Act III took these over the past few weeks, and we are just getting around to posting them. Thanks guys!

Corkscrew and Sandrobber

Us in the slings on the way down the hill in the Big Chute Lift. Makes our 25,000 lb. boat look awfully small, doesn't it?

And down safely in the water once again.

All for now...stay tuned.
