Day #600; Loop Miles to Date = 6,946
What a day! We left Great Kills at about 9am, and by 10:30 we were in the thick of the New York Harbor, cruising past the Statue of Liberty, one of the absolute highlights of every Loopers journey. The harbor was messy to say the least, particularly when we were trying for photo ops near the Statue. We were with our friends on Act III, so we jockeyed back and forth to get the perfect shot for each of us. What the pictures don't show, is that there are tour boats and ferries and water taxis and barges, and yes - warships...going every which way while we are trying to do this. It was invigorating!
Once clear of the City, things calmed down considerably. For a few miles, there were still some ferries to dodge, but after that it was quite a peaceful cruise up the Hudson. We rode the flood tide most of the way, providing us with a "free" 1 knot push from the current. And, we will have more of this to ride for the next few segments providing the timing works in our favor. The topography has changed dramatically in recent weeks. It is a real treat to start to see some hills again...and to be back on a river system. It will start to narrow as we move north from here, and we are looking forward to enjoying the beauty of the Hudson Valley...hopefully in some nice, sunny, warm weather.
Unfortunately, where we are at present (Half Moon Bay Marina in Croton-on-Hudson, NY) offers rather weak WiFi, so we can't really load all of our pictures from the trip through NYC. But, as soon as we get a decent connection, we will post these.
For now, we are camped out here. We have rented a car to do some sightseeing...today we head to see West Point, and tomorrow we plan to hit the Culinary Institute of America. Also in the area are some historic homes (FDR, Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, etc.) of which we will tour one or a couple over the weekend.
Here is just a teaser of more pictures to come...
