On Tuesday, we left Kingston after a brief one day stop. The ride up was nice...we rode the incoming tide the entire way. It was gray, and cloudy, and rainy again, but the ride was peaceful and the scenery pretty. We would have liked to have made this transit up the Hudson in nicer weather, as the landscape is gorgeous...but we have enjoyed it none the less. One thing we forgot to mention in our last post is that once we cleared West Point, we have now returned to FRESH water...no more salt water from here on out. No more crusty salt to clean off the boat every day...and all of our mechanical equipment that circulates raw water is much happier now.
Kingston City Marina. |
There was a small Maritime Museum in Kingston...here you can see that they are building a wooden boat. |
Somewhere near here is where this tale originated... |
We found Shady Harbor Marina to be a nice spot...the marina is great, other Loopers abound, there is a great restaurant here, decent WiFi, easy dog walking, and convenient laundry. They even have Bocce Ball and some other games on the lawn for entertainment. As well, they have a weekday special where we pay for 2 nights and get the 3rd free...always a good thing. The only thing lacking is a town to go into...nothing at all here.
However, the highlight of our stay here was a visit from Mary and Sally yesterday! Mary drove 1 1/2 hours to get to Sally's house, and then they drove another 2 1/2 hours to come see us. And then of course, they had to turn around again later and do it all again. What a treat to have them come visit! And thanks for lunch (or was it supper?). It was a beautiful day, and we had a great time!
So now we wait on the water in the Erie Canal to recede some. We thought that we were leaving today (Thursday) but we can't yet because there is too much water in the canal system. They closed a large part of the waterway a couple of days ago, and so everyone who is up there is basically trapped wherever they ended up. It is merely a matter of letting the water drain out of the canal and lower the water levels. Thankfully, there has been no rain for a couple of days now, so this helps tremendously. The spot where we want to enter the canal in Waterford, NY is pretty full with boats. Word is that the canal will re-open on Friday, at which point everyone who is up there will be able to move onward, thus freeing up the logjam of boats that is in front of us. With any luck, we'll head for Waterford on Friday, and be staged to start the canal in earnest on Saturday. Fingers crossed...
