Half Moon Bay to Kingston, NY

Day #605; Loop Miles to Date = 7,003

Another milestone reached...7,000 miles!

On Monday, we journeyed further north on the Hudson River. Although the weather remains cloudy, gray and occasionally rainy, the trip north is just beautiful and serene. It is such a peaceful change of pace from the past few months of travel. The cruising days are so simple right now, with trip planning limited to choosing a destination and a departure time. For the past many months, each travel day was complicated by tides, currents, winds, depths and waves...plus the many open water crossings where weather dictated our schedules. Very simply...we can totally relax right now - it almost seems too simple!

We didn't dally long in Kingston...just long enough to walk around town once, and grab dinner at a local "joint". It was a bit sleepy while we were there, but it was easy to imagine that on pretty summer days, the area could be quite busy. One thing we can confirm...it is hilly here in this town...1/2 mile walk uphill to dinner seemed quite a bit longer...going home rather short!

So, some pics from our day of travel on the water...

Commuter and freight trains run right along the river on both sides most of the way up. The commuter trains on the east bank...

...and the freight trains on the west bank.

From the water, the views of West Point are dramatically different. From our visit by car, it looked much like a college campus. But from the water, it surely looks more like a fortress.

The Culinary Institute.
This is an interesting one. This boat is a research vessel working for NOAA. They are running back and forth across the river taking data readings on the bottom contours. They then feed this data back to NOAA, which eventually makes it way to updates on our charts for depth readings. We've seen this boat home ported at Calvert Marina in Solomons, MD. Last year we had a conversation with the crew, and they told us that this summer they would be up on the Hudson doing surveys...and Voila! Small world...

One of the small islands that we drove by has a castle on it. This is popularly known as Bannerman's Island, ascribed to the man who bought the island and built the castle. This island has been the location used in numerous murder mysteries by various authors. It's an interesting history that you can read about here

Bannerman's Island (more properly called Pollepel Island).

Remains of the Castle.

All for now...further north we trek...
