And...We're Off!

Today (October 8th) we finally shoved off to officially start the Great Loop!

It has been a long process over the past few years to get to this point, and we are relieved and excited to have this day arrive. The past week has been a bit of a blur...selling 2 cars, countless trips to a variety of stores to get "one last thing", and provisioning the boat in a way that makes sense for us. Plus some doctors appointments, vet visits, returning stuff that we decided we didn't need...in addition to the regular boat chores that are part of life while living on a boat. Oh - and Rob is still working in his spare time! We think (hope?) that we will actually be more rested after a few days of cruising, as there is no way that our pace will be anything like it has been recently.

We left Island Cove Marina (Chattanooga) around noon, after washing the boat this morning, and getting a couple of last minute things accomplished. Saying goodbyes last night and this morning to some folks who have become great friends in a short period of time was both touching and difficult. We truly hope that we'll see these folks on the water in the future...we're already talking about where we could meet up both this winter in Florida and next year elsewhere.

We only had one lock to travel through today (Chickamauga Lock) just 6 or 7 miles from the marina...and as luck would have it, we had the longest wait that we have had at this lock yet. Fortunately, it was only about a 30 minute wait. Soon after, we stopped in downtown Chattanooga for one last quick visit - mostly to give the pups a break. Then we traveled through some of the most scenic miles on the Tennessee River...just beautiful. We only snapped a few photos, and none of them really do any justice to the beauty that we saw with our eyes. It was a really nice day...50 or so miles of cruising, and we are now tucked in for the night at Hales Bar Marina on the lower end of Lake Nickajack.

We'll sleep well tonight without a doubt! Tomorrow we plan to travel to Goose Pond Marina (a rather joy filled name to some of us for personal reasons) which is near Scottsboro, AL. We'll either stay just one night there or maybe two...we'll have to wait and see.

A few photos from today...promises from us that we'll have better ones in future posts!
